So are you feeling ok after the long weekend? I’m asking because I know that staying in the heat can be a bit draining – we call that Summerheat Evil in Chinese medicine, and I’ll talk about that more next week. This week, I want to talk about how to reclaim balance in your body with a popular food – watermelon.
A few weeks ago, we looked at the concept of food “nature”, the built in temperature of a food. The example I used was lettuce – a cold food. Today we’ll talk about how watermelon is a cooling food. (photo credit marykbaird@morguefile)
Knowing food nature (temperature) is helpful to create better balance in the body. When we’re outside in warm weather, the heat can have a negative effect on our health. Often, we’re outside for a barbeque on July 4th. If you feel like there are lingering effects of that even today – like difficulty concentrating, thirst, or dry throat, then you could need some rebalancing.
Eating watermelon is cooling for the body – so it often useful if you’ve been outside in the heat to have some watermelon to cool that extra heat off. This explains why watermelon is so popular at summer barbeques, because it’s a very quick way to regain healthy body balance in the summer heat. Another example of how nature provides for us if we eat seasonally!
What do you think? Did you feel the effects of being outside in the weather? Did you have watermelon? Do you think you still need some today? (The effects of excessive heat can last more than a few days, depending upon the severity and the particular body.) Let me know your comments and questions in the comments below. I read every one, and I’ll respond too.
To your health!
