Can you Think your way Fat?

If you remember, the Spleen is the organ most effected at this time of year. Also – the Spleen is to blame for most people, for excessive weight gain!

So, if you remember last week we talked about how if you worry, that can use up Spleen energy (If you missed it, last week’s article can be found here: http://acuspa.net/worried-lately/) So, if you overthink or otherwise overtax your Spleen system, you could actually think yourself fat! Using up your energy in worry and mental activity detracts from the digestive system. When we are not digesting well, our bodies will crave carbohydrates, which are easiest to get in the form of flour. And we’re really beginning to understand that it’s not eating fat that makes us fat – it’s eating flour and sugar that makes us fat! And when our Spleen is not functioning well, it lets us know by creating sugar or carb cravings. It’s a vicious cycle.  (pic by simonfilm@morguefile)

 

So if you find that you are in the habit of worrying or overthinking, remember that it’s not just harmless behavior. It’s consuming precious energy that your body could be dedicating to other activity, and causing problems for you! Why does a weak digestive system crave sugar or white carbs?

 

If your digestive system is feeling tired, it’s a bit lazy. And your body knows that white flour – simple carbs, and sugar are easy sources of energy – your body doesn’t have to work very hard to absorb the calories from white sugar and carbs. So when it’s not feeling very energetic, then it will ask you to eat these easy sources of energy. So – while this food is easy to get energy from – it’s also not good for you at all. The blood sugar spikes that come from eating sugar and flour cause havoc in your body. It often leads to diabetes or weight gain, or both. It can also lead to immune dysfunction.

 

So, try to take it easy on your digestive system for the next few weeks – about the 3 weeks before and after Solstice and Equinox. We are still before solstice and I’m definitely feeling a weaker digestive system myself. Have a question? Ask it in the comments below! Acupuncture is a great way to boost digestion.
